Urban Stream

Tonight was our first official interview with Nick Hermes from the project Urban Stream.  Nick has come up with an ingenious idea: a parking-space-sized shipping container that successfully converts a local restaurant’s entire compostable output into dozens of pounds of fresh, nutrient-rich greens to use back in the restaurant.  Vancouver is attempting to become the world’s most sustainable city by 2020 and has implemented a number of directives to make that happen.  This year, homes are provided with a small compost bin to collect food scraps.  Next year, apartments will be provided with the same.  The next year, restaurants will be given an even larger bin.  By 2016, any organic waste entering a landfill will be illegal.  Ideas like Nick’s are going to be a valuable asset to this community and all over the world.  At the moment, check out the video of what they’re doing at their website, and stay tuned for our interview!
